Day Nine: Queenstown

Today was an early start and the alarm woke us up but we didn't really want to get up!. We had a beautiful breakfast at the Intercontinental, I had baked eggs with smoked salmon and a side of some blue cheese and prosciutto and finished with a smoothie.

We drove to the airport and waited for our plane to Queenstown. Our plane to Queenstown reminded me of the plane that I went on to King Island many years ago - it was only very small but at least I could stand up straight. It was a smooth ride to Queenstown and coming in through the clouds we could see the snowy mountain tops poking through.

We collected our bags and walked to our new rental van and it happened to be the same thing that we had of the north island and funnily enough, it also had bald front tires!. Marco spoke to Europcar and wanted a tyre change the being Sunday that was going to be difficult. We just don't seem to have any luck with hire cars!!. It was a 6km drive to the centre of Queenstown and to the hotel Crowne Plaza. Our room wasn't ready yet so we put our bags in Bram and Eva's room while we waited.

We had lunch downstairs and it had a beautiful view of the harbour and the mountains above. I got the seafood chowder (with extra bread) and it was by far the best seafood dish I've had this trip. Full of prawns, calamari, mussels and salmon.

Jip and I decided to walk around the town and check out some of the stores selling ski clothing to possum fur scarves and hats. Unfortunately, we couldn't find any grocery stores for lunch for tomorrow so we decided to head back to hotel and do some washing.

For dinner, we went to Botswana Butchery - a modern fusion steak restaurant that also had other proteins to choose from. For entree, Jip and I shared the whitebait fritters with salad and bearnaise sauce. It was mind blowing delicious!!!! We washed it down with some wine followed by a perfectly cooked eye fillet steak for Jip and I had Red deer loin cooked rare with braised Osso bucco, forest mushrooms, Kumari potato puree, cherries and a pancetta twill. We decided to splurge and got desserts too. I had the Bomb Alaska with strawberry parfait, lemon and blueberry gell and flambeed with Grand Mariner.

We will sleep with full bellies tonight. Full sightseeing day tomorrow!
